We Are Middlesbrough ran from the 20th May for the week leading up to Radio 1’s Big Weekend, which was held in the town’s Stewart Park (25th/26th May).

Local people were involved in the BBC’s editorial process, and were encouraged to tell us their stories, their daily lives and were also encouraged on what they wanted covered during the week too (see the above link of the results).

During We Are Middlesbrough, BBC Tees, Look North and digital teams in the North East were joined by colleagues from across BBC News including BBC Breakfast, Radio 4’s Today programme, the Six and Ten O’Clock News, BBC News Channel, BBC Radio 5 live and BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat. – A real coverage-wide attention indeed and watching the 30 minute highlighted BBC programme, showed us how far Middlesborough has changed as a thriving town over the last few years.

Richard Burgess, UK News Editor, BBC News says: “After the success of our We Are Bradford week, when we received more than 800 stories directly from the audience, I am delighted BBC News is joining forces with our colleagues in BBC England and Radio 1 to bring this exciting project to Middlesbrough ahead of the Big Weekend. Once again, we’ll be aiming to get the people of Middlesbrough to tell us their stories in their own words – and showcasing those stories across all our output.

It’s worth checking out Middlesborough, the town centre, the iconic Tees bridge, museums, Riverside stadium and even stretch to a quick drive to the seaside area of Redcar.

Dan Thorpe, Managing Editor, BBC Tees, says: “BBC Tees is based in Middlesbrough and serves the area every day. Our strapline is ‘proud of where we live’, so we are looking forward to being joined by lots of network outlets to tell the stories which are important to people here.

If you are thinking of visiting, then why not stay in one of our town centre houses, Aske House provides all the amenities and is a stones throw to the heart of Middlesborough town centre, the university and shopping.
